Empowering Accessible Color Design

Organization: PaletteLab / Animal Analytics | Updated: September 2026

PaletteLab (https://palettelab.co) is an independent color exploration, generation, and accessibility suite built for designers, frontend developers, digital artists, and agencies. We believe that choosing and testing harmonious colors should be fast, mathematically sound, and 100% accessible to everyone without paywalls or restrictive licenses.

Our Philosophy: Good design begins with deliberate color decisions. Every palette on PaletteLab is engineered according to color harmony models (complementary, triadic, analogous) and tested for WCAG 2.1 AA/AAA contrast standards to ensure digital interfaces are accessible to all people, including those with visual impairments.

Our Mission & Purpose

Modern digital design requires colors that look exceptional on high-density OLED screens, print materials, and mobile interfaces alike. Too many color tools rely on generic scraped databases or lock essential export features behind subscriptions. PaletteLab was created to solve this by providing:

  • Free & Open Access: Over 7,900 original, mathematically harmonized palettes available for personal and commercial use without attribution requirements.
  • Built-in Accessibility: Instant WCAG contrast verification, 5x5 color pairing matrices, and real-time color blindness simulations (Protanopia, Deuteranopia, Tritanopia, Achromatopsia).
  • Instant Developer Productivity: One-click export to Tailwind CSS config tokens, CSS Custom Properties, SCSS variables, SVG palettes, and JSON.
  • Creative Freedom: An interactive spacebar harmonic studio, photo color extractor with loupe zoom, and gradient design workspace.

📐 Algorithmic Color Science

We generate palettes using precise HSL angle distribution and CIELAB perceptual lightness scales, preventing muddy clashes and unbalanced contrast.

🛡️ Strict Zero-Scraping Guarantee

We do not scrape or reproduce third-party palette catalogs. All palettes on PaletteLab are original algorithmic works or curated community submissions.

How Our Color Engine Works

Colors in PaletteLab are generated and tested across multiple scientific color spaces:

  1. Perceptual Uniformity (CIELAB & OKLAB): Traditional RGB color spaces do not match human perception — green appears brighter to human eyes than blue of the same numerical value. Our algorithms account for relative luminance to ensure visually consistent palette steps.
  2. Harmonic Geometry: By rotating color wheel angles (e.g., 180° for complementary pairs, 120° for triadic sets, and 30° for analogous neighbors), our engine produces natural, pleasing combinations.
  3. WCAG 2.1 Contrast Calculations: We calculate relative luminance using the formula L = 0.2126 * R + 0.7152 * G + 0.0722 * B (with sRGB gamma expansion) to calculate true contrast ratios against standard backgrounds.

Who We Are

PaletteLab was developed by Animal Analytics, an independent software studio passionate about developer productivity, design tooling, and open web standards. Our team consists of web engineers and visual designers who use these exact tools in our day-to-day workflow.

Editorial Standards & Ethical Monetization

To keep PaletteLab free forever, we utilize transparent, non-intrusive advertising through Google AdSense and occasional affiliate links to trusted design software (such as Tailwind UI or Figma). We adhere strictly to the Google AdSense Programme Policies, ensuring that ads never interfere with usability or compromise site performance.
